A US businessman has been sentenced to more than three years in prison for conspiring to export to Pakistan materials and equipment that can be used in nuclear reactors. Nadeem Akhtar was sentenced Friday in US District Court in Baltimore as tensions remain high with the US ally.
Akhtar was accused of trying to sell $400,000 of radiation detectors, calibration devices and other restricted nuclear-related equipment to Pakistan, which is thought to have about 100 nuclear warheads. Akhtar owns Computer Communications USA. The United States has banned exports to government organisations involved in Pakistan's nuclear weapons programs. US Attorney Rod Rosenstein says Akhtar misrepresented what items he was selling and to whom they would be sold.
