The laid off workers of Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) on Friday eventually got assurance from Governor House for the implementation of agreement of July 26, reached between KESC workers' union and utility management. Hundreds of workers under the banner of KESC Mazdoor Itehad staged sit-in outside Governor House after the delegation of KESC Mazdoor Itehhad submitted memorandum to representative of Governor.
In the wake of two-hour long sit-in outside the governor house in pursuance of their demands, a delegation of KESC Mazdoor Ittehad managed to approach Governor House to submit the memorandum draft for getting implementation of the promises made in said agreement.
Deputy Commissioner South Jamal Mustafa Qazi apprised the media that Dispute Resolution Committee, formed earlier on July 26, would be restored with notification on Monday, 16 January. He said that the committee would put forward its recommendations to Governor Ishtat-ul-Ibad after negotiating with parties, the KESC administration and labour union.
He assured that all issues of the workers would be resolved. Earlier, protestors staged a sit-in to protest against non-implementation of July 26, 2011 agreement and marched towards Governor House, which has been declared "Red Zone" amid tight security. The entire locality was protected by the police as it was feared that the protestors would attempt to besiege the locality while armoured personnel carriers, water cannons and large number of police mobiles were waiting for a showdown in case the protestors cross their limits. Chairman of CBA Union and member of KESC Solidarity Committee Ikhlaq Ahmed said that despite the passage of more than a year and repeated attempts to contact all concerned stakeholders, the agreement could not be implemented.
