Pakistan Muslim League (N) leader, Engineer Khurram Dastgir Khan MNA has said that no nation can survive without the production of new knowledge. Addressing the faculty of University of Health Sciences and Gujranwala Medical College, here at UHS on Thursday, the PML-N leader said: "The benefit of science and medicine needs to trickle down to general public and need of hour is to promote data gathering and evidence-based medical research among undergraduate medical students."
According to him, UHS and GMC have to be at the forefront to give a new outlook to health delivery system in the province. Hailing the decision of Punjab government to declare GMC as the constituent college of UHS, he said it was for the first time that people of Gujranwala were having the benefit of their proximity to Lahore. UHS Vice Chancellor, Professor M.H. Mubbashar congratulated the faculty of GMC on becoming the part of UHS and assured them of full support. He said that GMC was now entitled to all the privileges given to UHS by Higher Education Commission and other international organisation. "UHS would establish a fully equipped Computer Resource Lab for the faculty and students of GMC," he said, adding: "Efforts would also be made to upgrade DHQ Gujranwala."
Professor Mubbashar emphasised the need of putting in place a meaningful healthcare system with more emphasis on primary care. "All efforts would be made to make Gujranwala as a model of comprehensive healthcare. UHS would upgrade emergency and ambulance services in Gujranwala in collaboration with Institute of Learning Emergency Medicine, Dublin and Disaster Relief by Irish and Pakistani Ireland", he said. He added: "UHS would provide training to all medical officers, lady health workers and even faith healers of the Gujranwala division in order to achiever desired objective with respect to healthcare."
UHS VC, while lauding the services of GMC principal Professor Atiya Mubarik, resolved once again to make GMC a 'model institute'. GMC principal, Professor Atiya Mubarik said that she and her faculty were excited about the opportunities this development would provide to them. This is certainly a historic movement for us. We are honoured to be a part of UHS which is an internationally acclaimed university." Dr Nisar Cheema, Executive District Officer (health) Gujranwala and Dr Captain M. Zafar Iqbal, Medical Superintendent of Gujranwala District Headquarters Hospital were also present on the occasion.
