Director General (DG), Narcotics Control, Mohammad Shahid said on Thursday that the production of narcotics in Pakistan is nominal and it is smuggled in llarge scale from Afghanistan. The Ministry of Narcotics Control and law-enforcement agencies were making all-out efforts to stop smuggling, he said while addressing a seminar on "Use of narcotics amongst women and its negative effects on society."
Narcotics have brought the society on the verge of collapse, he said, adding that especially the women addicts were creating social problems because an addict woman destroys the whole family. According to a survey, 36 percent women in Punjab, 20 percent in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 19 percent in Sindh and 6 percent in Balochistan were drug addicts.
He said that the use of narcotics also creates negative attitude among children, therefore, they get involved in terrorist and other immoral activities. The Director General, Narcotics Control said that Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) and other law-enforcement agencies are trying their best to deal with smuggling of drugs. However, it was quite difficult to control due to a long border with Afghanistan.
He said that beside the government, the civil society would also have to play their role for controlling smuggling to achieve the status of "Poppy Free State". He said that the use of narcotics among the students of educational institutions, particularly, colleges and universities were on the rise. Therefore, he said it was the responsibility of the parents to keep an eye on their children.
Shahid said that the government was sincerely working for minimising the use of narcotics and rehabilitation of the drug addicts. He said that the public sector hospitals of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have allocated 1400 beds for drug addicts, where they were being provided free treatment.
