Opposition Leader in the National Assembly, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khanm has said that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) will not support any new constitutional amendment. "The PML-N will bring all opposition parties together to talk to government on the issue of amendment (about new provinces and to give legal cover to by-elections)," he said while talking to media outside the Parliament House.
The opposition leader asserted that the government was creating hurdles in the process of free, fair and transparent elections. "All opposition parties are united on the issue of free, fair and transparent elections in the country," he said. Nisar demanded of the government to appoint an independent Chief Election Commissioner for holding transparent elections. "We want such Chief Election Commissioner, who is independent and sincere, and it can only happen when the government is sincere for holding free, fair and transparent elections," he said.
He said opposition does not want to pressurize the government for elections' schedule. However, formation of independent commission and accountability bill were essential to have free, fair and transparent electoral process, he said. The government should appoint a new Chief Election Commissioner soon as only one-and-a-half month of incumbent CEC's tenure has left, he said.
To a question, he said that Election Commission was a national institution and all the parties should play their role in the reconstitution of the commission. He said the tenure of CEC under 18th amendment was five years. To another question, the opposition leader made it clear that there should neither be any confrontation within the institutions nor any deal.
He said that the opposition had no trust in government as it has history of backtracking. While criticising the Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani for his backtracking from his earlier remarks against the military leadership, he said that the prime minister's statements had become a joke. "The prime minister should think before speaking," he added. Opposition Leader said that the Parliamentary Committee on National Security was not an alternate for the Parliament and the committee could only present recommendations. He said that the government should come up with its own security policy.
