Opposing re-establishing private pharmacy shops in public-sector hospitals of the province, Pakistan Chemist & Druggist Association (PCDA) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sarhad Chamber of Commerce & Industry demanded review of the decision. The matter was discussed during a meeting held here on Friday at SCCI under its president, Afan Aziz and PCDA General Secretary, Mohammad Iqbal.
The meeting strongly opposed government plan for establishment of pharmacies at teaching hospitals and said the move would affect businesses in the province. Addressing the participants, Muhammad Iqbal said the decision could benefit a single pharmacy shop only, therefore government should review it. He said the association had protested over the issue and moved the court, which gave verdict in its favour that 'private pharmacies could not be established in government hospitals'. He said that chemists and druggists would lose millions of rupees they have invested in their businesses. He revealed that government has recently opened a private pharmacy in Abbottabad, which is a violation of court orders. He demanded immediate closure of this pharmacy.
The meeting decided to form a committee for addressing the issue. Members of PCDA warned that if their demand was not fulfilled, they will launch protests. SCCI president, Afan Aziz assured the members of chemists and drug associations for every possible support to prevention of spurious medicines and the addressing issue of establishing pharmacies and other issues confronting the community.
