Secretary General Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric, Central Labour Union (CBA) Khurshid Ahmed said on Friday that employees would not allow privatisation of the power sector in the country. He was addressing a joint meeting of Hydro Union and Faisalabad Electric Supply Company FESCO Engineers Association at FESCO headquarters.
He criticised the policies of the government saying that he preferred thermal generation instead of hydal projects to produce cheap electricity. He said that the power sector was over burdened with loan of Rs 368 billion only due to the wrong and ill-conceived policies of the government. He said that the government had not yet realised the gravity of the situation and was getting more and more loans by mortgaging grid stations.
He said that they had formed Engineers Workers Ittehad to save national economy and the workers' jobs. He appreciated the role of FESCO employees and said that they were at the forefront in this drive against the privatisation of power sector. This move was now taking roots in other Distribution Companies (DISCOs). Ghazanfar Ali Khan Baloch, President FESCO Engineers Association said that they had joined hands with workers to save power sector of Pakistan from complete destruction.
Mian Abdul Rashid Regional General Secretary Hydro Union said that the government had repeatedly invited us for negotiation but shook their confidence therefore, they had decided to continue their struggle against privatisation of power sector. They also opposed the so-called reformations in WAPDA/ PEPCO and said that they would not allow the division and sub division of this national institution. He said that they would stop electricity supply throughout Pakistan if government failed to pay any heed to their genuine demands.
