The first (National Immunisation Days (NIDs) of the year are scheduled on January 30, 31 and February 01'2012. Pakistan has reported a total of 192 cases so far, but several pending cases from last year are still under examination at the Polio Virology Lab at the NIH, and the final count for 2012 will be recorded by the end of January.
It is extremely unfortunate that 2011 saw Pakistan with the worst statistics in over a decade, and has reported the highest incidence of polio cases from all other endemic and non-endemic countries. Comparatively, polio cases rose by 33 percent over the previous year (144 cases in 2010 and 192 in 2011).-PR
