Congratulating the nation and the parliament on the unanimous passage of 20th Amendment Bill, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani Tuesday said that "from today it has been ensured that all future elections in the country will be held in a free, fair and transparent manner under an independent Election Commission and there shall be no 'imported' caretaker Prime Minister in future."
Speaking at National Assembly after the House unanimously passed the 20th constitutional Amendment, he said that the unanimous passage of the amendment had strongly dispelled the impression that politicians could not sit together to sort out issues. Not only has the parliament completed the necessities of the day through the adoption of 20th Amendment, it has also ensured that elections in future will be held in a free, fair and transparent manner by an impartial caretaker set-up.
The Prime Minister said that after the fall of Dacca, the Constitution of 1973 was the one which has kept intact the remaining Pakistan, and need to be strengthened further. He said that the Senate has been constituted under the Constitution, was grantor of the interests of the small provinces. Gilani also commended the efforts of the government and opposition members for evolving consensus to unanimously pass the 20th amendment.
Earlier, in response to a point raised by leader of opposition when the 20th amendment was presented in the House, the Prime Minister said the government wanted to hold the general elections in a free and transparent manner so that nobody could challenge its credibility and impartiality. He said the caretaker government would be fully neutral in its character. Gilani said there were some forces outside the Parliament, which wanted to sabotage the 20th Amendment.
To a point raised by Chaudhry Nisar regarding parliamentary committee constituted to review petroleum prices, he said the panel would soon begin work on it to give relief to people. About opposition leader's concerns on the absence of opposition in Sindh Assembly, Gilani assured the House that a judicious system would be introduced in all the provinces in light of the proposal of the leader of the opposition.
