Pakistan Muslim League-Likeminded (PML-L) has decided to break its long association with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), as it feels betrayed by the PML-N leadership over award of Senate's tickets, well-informed sources told Business Recorder.
The sources said that Salim Saifullah Khan, parliamentary leader of PML-L, has convened the meeting of his faction's Senators at his residence to devise strategy for the Senate's session wherein the 20th constitutional amendment will be approved. "We are disappointed by the behaviour of PML- N leadership in the awarding Senate tickets," said a close friend of Salim Saifullah.
PML-N and Likeminded were in talks for the last seven months for election's alliance and Senate tickets and the former had promised to award ticket of technocrat seat to Senator Haroon Akhtar Khan, brother of former Commerce Minister, Humayun Akhtar Khan. The Likeminded group, sources said, had sought two Senate tickets for Senator Haroon Akhtar Khan and Senator Gulshan Saeed, however, PML-N promised to award party ticket to Mr Khan who also received felicitations from different friends as the next candidate of PML-N.
"PML-N President Nawaz Sharif had made commitment personally with the Likeminded leadership that Haroon Akhtar will be awarded technocrat ticket from Punjab, but at the eleventh hours, they turned the table by awarding ticket to Senator Ishaq Dar," sources continued. PML-N wanted a strong man on financial affairs in Senate for which two candidates were available ie Senator Ishaq Dar and Senator Haroon Akhtar.
Ishaq Dar, former Finance Minister and a close relative of Nawaz Sharif, forced Mr Sharif not to honour his commitment with Likeminded. "We feel that PML-N has failed in its first test so it is better to rethink our ties," said one of PML-L leaders from Lahore. The sources said that the 'betrayed' PML-L leadership was now considering to initiate talks with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf of Imran Khan, a third option for those politicians being ignored by their parties.
