Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Wednesday said that a binding agreement between PPP and PML-N was not to field any candidate from the party for presidential slot.
Talking to Business Recorder on telephone, Pervez Rashid, who is also spokesman of PML-N, regretted Javed Hashmi's statement that he was not allowed to run for presidential elections by Nawaz Sharif and said that we were not in a position to elect our own president as we had only 90 seats.
"The most important thing was an agreement with the PPP that both parties would not field any candidate from their respective parties as the president should be neutral and acceptable to all...[and] Nawaz Sharif himself had clarified it on so many occasions", he said.
Pervez Rashid stated, "we thought that Javed Hashmi left the party on principles but his statement speaks otherwise and negates his stance that he never did politics for personal gains". "I request Hashmi being a politician of such a high stature to reconsider his statement because we can not think that he will quit the party just for personal reasons as he is a man of principle", he maintained.
About Hashmi's claim that Mushahid Hussain Sayed had agreed to withdraw his nomination papers if he was given a chance to contest elections, Pervez Rashid said that Mushahid's candidature paved the way for Zardari to clinch the top slot. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) leader Javed Hashmi had said his former boss PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif did not want him to run against Asif Ali Zardari due to his party's understanding with PPP at the highest level.
He had further revealed that Nawaz Sharif did not want him to contest the presidential election despite his (Hashmi's) assurance that he would resign from the party within one month if he won the elections. This correspondent tried to contact Mushahid Hussain Sayed for comments, but he did not respond till the filing of this story.
