As many as nine Senate candidates have returned unopposed, while 98 are contesting Senate elections on the remaining 45 seats of the Upper House being held on March 02.
According to the final list issued by Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), nine candidates have been elected to Senate unopposed. Pakistan People's Party (PPP) candidate Usman Saifullah and Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) Mushahid Hussain Syed has been elected unopposed on a general and a reserved seat for technocrat seat of Islamabad, respectively.
PPP's candidate Aitzaz Ahsan and PML-N candidate Mohammad Ishaq Dar have been elected unopposed on two technocrat seats from Punjab. PML-N candidate Nuzhat Sadiq and PPP's Khalida Parveen have also been elected unopposed on the seats reserved for women from Punjab, while PML-N's Kamran Michael has also returned unopposed on the reserved seat for minorities from the province.
From Sindh, PPP's Abdul Hafeez Sheikh and MQM's Barrister Farogh Naseem were elected unopposed on the seats reserved for technocrats. According to details, in Punjab there are eight candidates against seven general seats, in Sindh there are 13 candidates contesting for general seats, three on reserved seats for women and two for seats reserved for non-Muslim.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, there are 25 candidates contesting for forthcoming senate elections with 13 on general seats, four on seats reserved for women, six on seats reserved for technocrats including UUlema and two for non-Muslim. In Balochistan, there are a total of 41 candidates in the run, 19 on general seats, nine on seats reserved for women, eight on seats reserved for technocrats including Ulema and five on seats reserved for non-Muslims. From FATA, the contesting candidates are 11 against 11 general seats.
Meanwhile, by-elections on 10 National and Provincial Assemblies seats would be held on Saturday. The constituencies are NA-9 Mardan-I‚ NA-140 Kasur-III‚ NA-148 Multan-I‚ NA-149 Multan-II‚ NA-168 Vehari-II‚ NA-195 Rahim Yar Khan-IV‚ PP-18 Attock-IV‚ PP-44 Mianwali-II‚ PS-53 Tando Muhammad Khan-cum-Hyderabad and PS-57 Badin-I.
