Billionaire miner Clive Palmer failed in his bid to maintain control of Australian A-League club Gold Coast United after his Supreme Court injunction application was refused late Friday. Football Federation Australia (FFA), who this week terminated Palmer's licence for contravening competition regulations, will now take over the operation of the last-placed club for the remaining four rounds of the season.
Justice Jean Dalton denied Palmer an interim injunction until a full hearing on Wednesday (March 7), saying disparaging comments made by the mining magnate at the FFA over the past fortnight showed both parties could not co-operate. While concerned about damages to players and staff, as well as to the integrity of the competition, Justice Dalton ruled the FFA could take over the team and ensure they played out the season.
