Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) released its fortnightly report reveals that around 14.37 million cotton bales have been sourced to the country's ginners by February 29th, 2012, as revealed by the report, there has been a 25.01 percent increase in the quantum of cotton reaching the ginners by 29th February, as compared to the 11.50 million bales of cotton that reached the ginners during the same period last year.
Briefing to newsmen about the cotton arrival on Saturday PCGA Chairman Amanullah Qureshi alongwith Group head Haji Muhammad Akram said that 12.46 million cotton bales were sold to the textile units, exporters bought some 9,20,706 bales. Thus, overall 13.38 million bales have been traded till now, without Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) participating in the trading activity so far. Economic Co-ordination Committee deferred the proposal to procure the one million bales of cotton through TCP.
PCGA Chairman added that there are 9,18,989 bales, which still remain to be sold. Chairman of PCGA Amanullah Qureshi has said that increase of cotton arrival was 25.01 percent. He said total 1,43,78,962 bales of cotton were received during this season. It was 28,76,534 bales more than last year showing an increase of 25.01 percent in the production inspite of unfair weather, flood, diseases and pest attacks in Sindh and monsoon rains in Punjab. While 2,84,729 cotton bales were received during last fortnight from February 15th to February 29,2012.
He said that total 320 ginning factories are operational in Sindh and Punjab. Recent floods had badly hit the cotton crop in the districts of Hyderabad, Nawabshah, Dadu, Mirpur Khas Sangarh and other areas of Sindh. They said that 43.38 percent cotton was destroyed in Hyderabad, 56.16 percent in Mirpur Khas, 50.78 percent in Sangarh, 42.23 percent in Nawabshah, 5.77 percent increased in Naushehro Feroze, 2.65 per cent in Khairpur, 57.13 per cent decreased in Dadu and 100 per cent increased in Jamshoro, 142.14 per cent increased in Balochistan.
The report reveals an increase of 58.56 per cent Multan. 85.18 per cent cotton in Lodhran district, 54.43 per cent in Khanewal, 125.15 per cent in Muzaffargarh, 40.33 per cent in Dera Ghazi Khan,142.13 per cent in Rajanpur, Layyah 64.18 per cent, 40.84 per cent in Vehari, 38.11 in Sahiwal, Pakpattan 30.81 per cent, 437.80 per cent in Kasur, Okara 18.73 per cent , 45.03 in Toba Tek Singh, 19.56 per cent in Faisalabad, Jhang 62.26 per cent, 94.77 per cent in Mianwali, 86.16 per cent in Bhakkar, and 30.15 per cent in Sargodha, Rahimyar Khan 43.19 per cent, Bahawalpur 39.32 per cent, Bahawalnagar 37.91.
The unsold stock is 9,96,144 bales, which is more than last year, when unsold stock was 3,94,589. Chairman of Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) said that Punjab contributed 1,17,19,404 bales, last year it contributed 77,16,482 bales showing an increase of 51.87 percent.
Similarly, Sindh contributed 26,59,558 bales against the last year production of 37,85,946 bales showing a decrease of 29.75 per cent and Balochistan 61,500 bales. District-wise production data showed that Multan contributed 6,63,991 bales, Lodhran 4,49,213 bales, Khanewal 11,42,256 bales, Muzaffargarh 5,38,370 bales, Dera Ghazi Khan 4,21,748 bales, Rajanpur 4,88,818 bales, Layyah 2,92,741 bales, Vehari 10,59,849 bales, Sahiwal 7,28,696 bales, Pakpattan 3,47,970 bales, Okara 60,400 bales, Kasur 43,200 bales, Toba Tek Singh 3,92,715 bales, Faisalabad 1,36,056 bales, Jhang 2,50,432 bales, Mianwali 3,19,100 bales, Bhakkar 1,73,200 bales, Sargodha 52,400 , Rahim Yar Khan 14,38,255 bales, Bahawalpur 11,95,881 bales, and Bahawalnagar 12,72,103 bales.
Sindh's district-wise production figures were: Hyderabad 2,03,160 bales, Mirpurkhas 1,70,721 bales, Sanghar 7,73,608 bales, Nawabshah 1,99,785 bales, Naushero Feroze 2,05,683, Khairpur 2,14,062 bales, Ghotki 2,94,369 bales, Sukkur 3,44,525 bales, and Dadu 49,400 bales, Jamshoro 85,294, Badin 27,832 Balochistan added 58,400 bales to the total.
PCGA claimed that 2 million bales were destroyed in the floods in Sindh. Policy-makers may hope that bumper cotton crop will help the government make deficiency in other areas, taking the annual growth rates to over 7 percent.
The chairman PCGA reiterated demand to the government to announce relief and bail out package for 250 cotton ginning factories of flood-hit areas. The report said that the ginners pressed 1,43,01,516 bales. Only 9,20,706 bales were exported by commercial exporters (who mostly purchased from Punjab), and merely 3,20,875 bales were purchased from Sindh. The textile industry purchased 1,24,62,112 and 9,96,144 bales were available with ginners as unsold stock. They told that cotton trading remained firm amid strong physical price and higher cottonseed prices.
