The 33rd annual day of Jinnah College for Women was held on Saturday in which cash prizes and souvenirs were distributed among the outstanding performer students of 2011, for their distinctions in various curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular activities by the chief guest Senator Afrasiab Khattak.
For her top position in the University of Peshawar BSc Examination 2011, Hafiza Sadia was awarded gold medal while Hafiza Areeba and Rubi Shakoor got silver and bronze medals for securing second and third prizes. Jinnah College has the honour of securing all the top three slots in the UoP, BA annual 2011 exams for which Sara Shah was awarded with gold medal for getting first position while Alena Hashim and Samina Khan got second and third prizes respectively.
Ramesh Tariq was given gold medal for her top position in the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Peshawar 2011 exams in the pre-Medical group and Anum Rehman for her second place. Mahrooh Naseem was awarded with gold medal for grabbing first position in BISE Pre Engineering 2011 examination.
Speaking on the occasion, Senator Afrasiab termed education and increase in the literacy rate for females as key towards development of the country. He said, "the United Nations has directed all the countries in the world to allocate at least four percent of their GDP to the education but unfortunately our allocation is hovering around two percent only. Our country's budget allocation for education is the least in South Asia and one of the lowest in the world, he said.
"We must have to change our priorities and make Pakistan as a true welfare and democratic state than a national security state which is only possible through good education," he added. The Senator pointed out to some of the drastic changes needed in our curricula in order to make it current and compatible with the advanced world while keeping in view the cultural and religious aspects of modernisation because we can't remain a closed society and survive in the world as a develop nation.
He said that certain factions were busy in creating misunderstandings between religion, traditions and modernisation but let me tell you that modernisation was not a struggle between culture and religion, in fact it the way forward towards development while staying within our norms.
Senator praised the tremendous contribution made by Jinnah College for women in imparting quality education to the students of Khyber Pakhtukhwa and Fata. "The students of this college have achieved a lot over the years for which I congratulate the Principal and University of Peshawar," he said. He announced construction of a new hall within Jinnah College for Women and award of cash prizes to all the topper students under the Chief Minister "Storay Da Pakhtunkhwa" Programme.
