Apropos a letter titled "Delay in SBP officers salary package" carried by Business Recorder on 17th Feb, 2012, while endorsing the appeal of the letter, I feel immense pride that at least one among the silent majority of the officers, has spoken up against the unjust delay in the announcement of the officers salary package. As a result of which, the officers of the SBP, are facing not only financial constraints, but also have to put up with the taunts and jibes of the clerical and non-clerical staff, whose salaries already stand revised.
Expressing feigned sympathy on the unfair treatment to the officers, they offer to come to the roads to demonstrate for their cause. The officers spurn their cosmetic solidarity, because they hold the image of their institution higher than anything else. Come what may, I believe, they will bear the financial pinch, but never think of coming to the roads, even in their wildest dreams.
However, all is not well, against the developing pessimism amongst them about their future in the central bank and its subsidiaries, most often employees are seen engaged in heated verbal exchanges among themselves, giving way to indiscipline, not seen earlier in the vicinity of the central bank.
Thus, the casualty, in the wake of the management's deliberate raising of walls, among the employees, is discipline and devotion to the organisation. Presently, the unionised employees think themselves to be the real driving force and thereby are vitiating the congenial atmosphere. I am of the view that they are justified to some extent, as unbridled pampering by the management at the cost of the real working class, creates an unsavoury situation anywhere.
I am afraid, if the unresponsive approach towards the officers remains in force, their trust would erode, leaving them shaken, and disabled in playing the supposed active role, they have played against the tide of recession as well as during financial turmoil.
Through the courtesy of your esteemed daily, I implore the Governor SBP to take immediate notice of the prevailing depressed sentiments among the officers, on account of delay in revision of their salaries, which apparently may be seen as good by layman, but in fact, after income tax deduction, staff loan recoveries and other essential recoveries, is insufficient to take home, unable to meet the domestic expense of a fortnight. Surely, sir, the increase delayed, for long, cannot enable them to face the escalating price-led inflation.
