Rejecting Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N's) complaints, Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday upheld the results of the seven general seats in Senate from Balochistan. The ECP, following recount a vote, overruled the objection of PML-N on the success of Awami National Party (ANP) candidate, Dawood Khan Achakzai and upheld the results, which were earlier withheld by the provincial election commission.
The PML-N, however, rejected the decision and announced that it would move the Supreme Court and the Chief Election Commissioner. The PML-N's provincial leadership had registered complaint over a rejected vote. It had demanded that the rejecting vote should be included in the counting. It had also accused its rivals of making incorrect use of ballot papers. Upon which, the provincial election commission referred the matter to the central ECP by withholding the election results.
However, the ECP after a vote recount in the presence of concerned returning officers and candidates upheld the decision of the presiding officer on the results of the seven general seats of Balochistan province, paving way for the ANP's candidate Dawood Khan to clinch the general seat. The ECP also stated that an appeal could be filed against its decision.
According to earlier results, Pakistan People's Party (PPP) had won four seats, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) two, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) three, Balochistan National Party-Awami (BNP-A) two and ANP one.
Those who were declared successful on seven general seats were PPP's Barrister Saifullah Magsi‚ Sardar Fateh Mohammad Hasni and Yousaf Baloch; JUI-F's Hafiz Hamadullah, BNP-A's Israrullah Zehri, PML-Q's Saeedul Hassan Mandokhail and ANP's Dawood Khan Achakzai.
On the two seats reserved for women, out of eight candidates, BNP-A's Naseema Ehsan and PML-Q's Robina Irfan were declared successful. On the seats reserved for Ulema and technocrats, winners were Mufti Abdul Sattar of JUI-F and Rezi Khan Kakar of PPP. Hayman Dass of JUI-F won the seat for minorities.
