Judicial Commission of Pakistan has nominated the names of six new additional judges for Lahore High Court (LHC). The commission has also recommended the names of Sheikh Ahmed Farooq and Jahangir Arshad for the appointment as judges of Federal Shariat Court.
The JCP's meeting chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was held here on Saturday and considered eight names for appointment of LHC judges. The Commission approved the names of Abdus Sami Khan, Ayesha A. Malik, Shahid Waheed, Baqir Ali Najfi, Shujaat Ali and Ibadur Rehman Lodhi Mirza for additional LHC judges.
On the other hand, the matter relating the appointment of Shams Mehmood Mirza in the LHC was deferred and the name of Shahid Karim was dropped on recommendation of JCP sub-committee. According to the sources, Punjab Bar Council had expressed reservations over three names; Shahid Waheed, Shams Mehmood Mirza and Shahid Karim regarding appointment as LHC judges.
In view of the PBC concerns, Chief Justice of Pakistan, who is the chairman of JCP, on Friday constituted a sub committee, headed by Justice retired Chaudhry Ijaz Ahmad and comprising Attorney General for Pakistan Maulvi Anwar ul Haq and bar councils representatives Khalid Ranjha and Rai Bashir Ahmad, which examined the credentials of three lawyers. After going through their documents, the committee decided to drop the name of Shahid Karim as LHC judge. The matter related to Shams Mahmood Mirza has also been deferred.
