The Supreme Court while giving seven days to CPO Faisalabad to arrest an accused of a gang rape case, Asghar Ali, warned that if he failed to arrested the accused IGP Punjab would be asked to transfer him for being incompetent. A division bench of the apex court comprising Justice Jawad S. Khawaja and Justice Muhammad Athar Saeed adjourned further hearing to March 22 of an appeal converted into suo motu case.
Asghar Ali had reportedly called the applicant, Samina, to his office promising to give her giving and later he and his four friends; Ansar Ali, Muhammad Ihsan, Tariq Ali and Karam Hussain, raped her. All the accused had been arrested, however, Lahore High Court granted them bail about seven months ago.
Later Samina filed an appeal in the Supreme Court seeking cancellation of their bails. The bench was informed by Faisalabad City Police Officer (CPO) Bilal Siddique Kamyana that the accused Asghar Ali was still at large and police needed more time to arrest him.
The CPO said that police was making all out efforts to arrest the accused, adding that the court could confirm the efforts by holding inquiry. "Why we should hold inquiry, when the accused has not been arrested despite repeated orders." the court observed.
Censuring the CPO Faisalabad for his failure to arrest the accused, Justice Khawaja said the girl would hold their collars at the Day of Judgement, if they failed to dispense her with justice. The court accepted the CPO's request for more time and observed, "It is final and last chance for you (CPO) to arrest the accused."
