There is a need to bridge the growing trust deficit between public and police in order to arrest the strengthening extortion mafia in the city, said Additional Inspector General (AIG) Akhtar Hussain Gorchani on Friday. Speaking at a news conference at the CIA Centre, he said that despite the growing activities of extortion mafia, the police received only 15 complaints in a couple of weeks.
"It is a matter of concern and we have to think whether the problem is really acute or only being projected as serious, or people are reluctant to visit police station to report the crime as they have no trust in police," he added. Gorchani said his department had set up a separate 'Anti Extortion Cell' to take effective measures against the mafia. The cops deployed in the cell were committed and doing their job honestly, he added. The AIG, however, said he could not give a timeframe for eliminating the crime. He said that DSP Wasif Qureshi, who is In-charge of the Anti Extortion Cell, would lead the operation against extortionists.
