Sindh Bar Council (SBC) on Saturday announced three day mourning and boycott of courts proceedings till Monday to condemn the killings of two lawyers. A senior lawyer, Sallahuddin Haider Jaferi Advocate and his son, Ali Raza Haider Jaferi Advocate were assassinated while they were on way to District Court Malir by some unknown persons. The killings, which the Sindh Home Minister, Manzoor Wasan termed "sectarian".
SBC also appealed to all courts across Sindh to observe black day in protest against the killings of two lawyers and boycott the courts hearings till Monday. Sindh High Court Bar Association, Karachi Bar Association and Malir Bar Association boycotted the courts proceedings with coming to know the killings of their colleagues. Courts presented deserted look after the under trial prisoners were sent back to jails while the litigants were asked to go back home for the courts would not hold hearings of their cases, as lawyers were protesting.
Chief Justice of Sindh High Court, Mushir Alam issued directives to the registrar of the court to ask the district and session judge of Malir to present a preliminary investigation report on the lawyers' killings to him besides monitoring the probe. He was also asked to include the President and General Secretary of Malir Court Bar Association in the probe into the lawyers' assassination, according to sources. Sallahuddin Haider Jaferi was a prominent lawyer who had great respect amongst colleague, whom also called him "Baba-e-Malir Bar" for he was the first president of the Bar to serve the association.
He was also a key voice in the lawyers' movement to restore the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry during the military dictator's regime.
Malir Bar Association also announced to stage a sit-in on Monday on National Highway to protest the killing of their fraternity members. The association would also call a meeting of its general body to discuss the fresh wave of violence against lawyers and pay tribute to their slain colleagues.
