Agriculture experts have underlined the importance of conducting research on wheat, which is staple food, in order to introduce more varieties. The Institute of Plant Sciences, University of Sindh on Wheat Genetic Resources and Integrated Science organized a lecture, here on Wednesday.
Noted scientist from National Agriculture Research Council (NARC), Dr Abdul Mujeeb Kazi was the key speaker. Dean Faculty of Natural Sciences Dr Muhammad Tahir Rajput also spoke on the occasion. Pro Vice Chancellor of Shikarpur Campus of Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur and noted Botanist Dr Ghulam Raza Bhatti, Dr Abdul Rasheed Khan Director Biodiversity Center and Director Botanical Garden of Peshawar University, a large number faculty and students of the Institute of Plant Sciences as well as other institutes attended the lecture.
Dr Kazi talked about the importance of wheat breeding, origin of wheat as well as production of synthetic hexaploid wheat and its dispersal. He urged the scientists to find out ways and means for the line of action for future research as well as guidelines for young students and scientists. Dr Muhammad Tahir Rajput said that wheat was an important crop world-wide and especially in Pakistan, therefore, to deal with the issue of food shortage it was imperative to develop more wheat verities. Dr Sher Muhammad Magrio, Dr Wazir Shaikh and other also spoke on the occasion.
