The law enforcement agencies have arrested terrorists who planned to attack Parliament House during the address of President Asif Ali Zardari to a joint session of parliament, said Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Saturday. The security agencies have arrested the main handler and an employee of the ministry of foreign affairs who was involved in the conspiracy, he told reporters after presiding over a meeting on law and order in Islamabad.
The arrested terrorists belong to Miranshah, North Waziristan Agency, he said. In view of the continued threats from terrorists, Malik directed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Bin Yameen to further beef up security of Islamabad and take extra steps to ensure safety of the citizens of Islamabad.
To a question regarding rising car lifting incidents in Islamabad, Malik said that strict directives have been issued to police to take forceful steps to curb carjacking in the city. Strict action will be taken against Station House Officers (SHOs) of the concerned area if the directives are not followed, he added.
He said more incentives and plots would be given to the families of martyred police. The government was paying special attention to the welfare of police, he said. Responding to a question on Karachi situation, Malik said that a conspiracy was hatched to sabotage law and order in Karachi and added that foreign hand was involved in it. He added that all the parties should join hands for restoration of normalcy in Karachi.
To another question, he said the government has not yet decided to resume Nato supplies and the parliament would take a decision on this. Currently no foreign security agency is operating in the country, he added. Malik directed the IGP to set up an Anti-Corruption Wing in Islamabad Police. Earlier, the IGP told the minister that over two gangs have been apprehended and carjacking has been considerably reduced.
