Karachi Electric Supply Company has termed Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) claims as grossly irresponsible, wherein the MD Water Board expressed defiance by stating that it was not liable to pay monthly electricity bills under some "agreement".
Point to note is that earlier in February, KWSB had filed a suit against KESC, seeking immunity against disconnection and payment of dues; Sindh High Court issued orders to KWSB to deposit Rs5 Billion with the Court Nazir, needless to mention that it was not complied with as well.
KESC stated that KWSB's snow-balling default tantamount to consumption of free electricity and is coupled with defiance towards clearing the dues running into Billions. The power utility said that every consumer, big or small, needed to pay their bills and no excuse could be entertained for non-payment, especially where wilful default is established.
KESC is in the business of generating, transmitting and distributing power and it cannot afford philanthropy by virtue of providing free electricity. Electricity generation is a very costly affair and it needs regular inflow of hard cash to purchase fuel to run the power generation plants, maintain transmission lines and manage such a vast distribution system.-PR
