Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Wednesday accused federal minister for interior Rehman Malik of being behind the new wave of sectarian clashes in Gilgit-Baltistan. Speaking at a press conference, Co-ordinator PML-N Gilgit-Baltistan Council Siddiqul Farooq said that the drama was being carried out to divert the attention from Supreme Court's verdicts on corruption cases of PPP-led regime and never ending load-shedding.
Farooq said the recent sectarian violence in GB was evidence of the fact that the Mehdi Shah-led administration failed in restoring peace and performing its constitutional duty of protecting citizens' life and property. He said that Chief Minister GB Syed Mehdi Shah should immediately step down instead of going to offer fateha in Garhi Khuda Baksh after failing to protect the precious lives of innocent citizens. He called for across the board action against the elements involved in the militancy and destabilising peace of the area.
"The government knows who is involved in the violence but its silence to take them to task reflects that it is being done on the behest of Rehamn Malik, who seems not serious in finding a tangible solution to the problem," he alleged. "There is a dire need to find a long-lasting solution so that such incidents may not take place again. All the time such violence originates from GB and later spread all over the country," he added.
The PML-N leader said that Gilgit-Baltistan was highly sensitive region because it was located in close proximity with China, India and Central Asia where Frontier Constabulary, Gilgit Scouts and intelligence agencies had their presence, besides police and occasional watch by the Pakistan Army. He said that the law enforcement agencies were aware of the elements involved in these activities, adding that any negligence from government side or delay in taking stern action against them would be disastrous. He flayed the government for not implementing a joint agreement undertaken by all the stakeholders to ensure peace in the area and said that Mehdi administration wilfully did not implement it on the directives of Rehman Malik.
