Police beef up security following threats to Sonu Nigam’s life
The Mumbai Police has initiated move to increase the security cover of noted Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam in the wake of a fresh security threat. It has been several months since Sonu sparked controversy with his Azaan tweet, while his comment landed him in trouble earlier but this time it is bit too serious.
A report in India Today stated that on February 5, the Maharashtra State Intelligence Department issued an advisory of a threat to singer Sonu and two Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs, Ram Kadam and Ashish Shelar. The report from the intelligence department stated that Sonu can be attacked by terrorists at any public place, promotional activity or during an event. Following the report, special security has been provided by Mumbai Police to the Bollywood singer.
His controversial tweet pointed out that he was against the use of loudspeakers for Azaan and forcing religiousness on people. It led to the singer facing the ire of the Muslim community in India and also the social media users. Sonu was also challenged to shave off his head and the singer did so in defiance of a ‘fatwa’ issued against him.
When contacted, Nigam declined to comment clearly, saying, “I am as ambiguous [about the threat] as you are,” Indian media reported.
