Glowing tributes were paid to the Poet of the East and great Philosopher Dr Allama Muhammad Iqbal on his 74th death anniversary observed on Saturday. A large number of people belonging to all walks of life visited the Mazar-e-Iqbal in Lahore to pay homage to the national poet.
Different social, political and cultural organisations arranged special programmes to pay homage to the Poet of the East, while debate competitions, seminars and conferences were arranged in schools, colleges and universities to highlight his teachings and philosophy.
In Lahore, Nazriya Pakistan Trust in collaboration with Aiwan-e-Karkunan Tahreek-e-Pakistan Trust and Markazia Majlis-e-Iqbal organised separate functions to mark Iqbal Day. Speakers in these functions said that Allama Iqbal dreamt of Pakistan where brotherhood, social and economic justice would prevail.
"We must create a society according to the vision of the great poet, who gave the idea of a separate homeland for Muslims of the subcontinent where they could practice their Islamic values and culture," they added. They said that teachings of Allama Iqbal were like a beacon of light to maintain tolerance, peace and stability in society.
Addressing the function of Markazia Majlis-e-Iqbal and later talking to media, Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan, who is defending Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani against contempt charges, said that he is defending his client with reference to charge of not writing a letter to Swiss Court.
Aitzaz, however, said, if the court did not accept his point of view/ arguments, PM Gilani may face punishment. Answering a question, Aitzaz said that it is not his or the job of media to declare Ali Musa Gilani a culprit. To another query, he said, "it is the assignment of Core Committee to nominate the person for the slot of new Prime Minister, if situation arises."
He called for promoting tolerance apart from promoting education to achieve the goal of progress and prosperity for the country. Earlier, addressing the function Aitzaz eulogised the services of Allama Iqbal and stressed for following his teachings.
In the other function of Nazriya Pakistan Trust, speakers including Professor Dr Rafiq Ahmed, Begum Bushra Rehman, Oraya Maqbool highlighted Iqbal's teachings and philosophy which led Muslims to get an independent state in subcontinent. They said the Muslims of sub-continent under the dynamic leadership of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah succeeded in materialising the dream of Allama Iqbal in the form of Pakistan.
It may be noted Iqbal being one of the most prominent leaders of the All India Muslim League is also famous for his 1930 address in Allahabad that encouraged creation of a "state in north-western India for Muslims. A delegation of Government College University Lahore Majlis-e-Iqbal on Saturday visited the mausoleum of Allama Iqbal. The delegation comprising a large number of GCU students and teachers laid a floral wreath at the Mazar-e-Iqbal and paid a tribute to the services the great poet rendered for Muslims.
GCU Vice Chancellor Professor Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman said Dr Allama Muhammad Iqbal's philosophy guarantees the Muslim renaissance. His deliberations both in verse and prose fuel the imagination of Muslim Ummah, particularly his poetry composed in Urdu and Persian spell out the manifesto for purposeful change, he added.
