Egypt said Sunday that it was cancelling its gas agreement with Israel, Israeli Channel 2 television reported. The report called it a "blow" to the 1979 peace treaty between the two countries.
Egypt made the announcement to East Mediterranean Gas (EMG), a joint company in which Israelis and Egyptians have shares and which operates a gas pipeline that runs from the Egyptian city of Al-Arish to the southern Israeli city of Asheklon, said the broadcaster. There was no immediate official comment in Egypt.
Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said he did not know of the decision and was "surprised" by the report.
"If it is true, it is severe," he told dpa. The pipeline has been blown up more than a dozen times since a popular revolt deposed former president Hosny Mubarak in February 2011.
