Vehicles: new-look transfer letters from next month

The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Excise and Taxation Office (ETO) is likely to introduce security-featured transfer letters next month aimed at making the transfer (sale/gift) of vehicles transparent and curbing the use of vehicles in terrorist activities.
"The ETO office has sent a request to the Printing Corporation Pakistan for printing security-featured transfer letters...(which) would enable the ETO to monitor the purchase of stolen, smuggled and tampered vehicles," an official said. He said that DC Aamir Ali Ahmad had approved the issuance of such transfer letter and directed the excise and taxation department to accelerate work in this regard. "People who have already registered their vehicles would apply for new transfer letters after the ETO office completes the whole process," he said.
The official said that the issuance of new transfer letters would also help police trace owners of vehicles used in terror activities. Currently owners and purchasers sign an agreement on a plain paper or an affidavit for the transfer of a vehicle. But the ETO office is unable to authenticate such transfers as the authority has no involvement in the process, he said.
