Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Monday insisted that he would not resign as Supreme Court decision in contempt case had nothing to do with his disqualification. Talking to media person here after he addressed a ceremony organised in connection with regularisation of Pakistan Broadcasting Association (PBC) daily wagers, Gilani said that the Sharif brothers should wait for a detailed judgement of the Supreme Court in contempt case.
Gilani cited the case of the then US President, Bill Clinton, who, according to Gilani that led to continued in his office even after he was fined by the Court. Gilani said he would like to know about the court's ruling freedom of Nawaz Sharif from Adyala Jail and his travel to Jeddah. He said that Pakistan Muslim League (N) could not organize even a "short march" what to take about a "long march."
He also said that the Supreme Court decision was a surprise for the entire world because he was convicted of a charge which was never framed against him. Gilani said the court was perhaps not showing a strong sense on urgency or enthusiasm in the Mehran Bank scam that it had shown in the contempt case against him. He said only speaker National Assembly was empowered to take a decision about his disqualification.
The Prime Minister said he would only listen to the directions of the Speaker, who if asked him to leave he will immediately step down. According to him, said that there is no law in the country through which judiciary can disqualify an elected representative of people. Running of Parliament is neither the job of leader of the House nor of leader of the opposition. In fact, it is the prerogative of the speaker of the National Assembly to run the house, he added. Gilani insisted that he enjoyed complete immunity in relation to discharge of his responsibilities as "prime minister". According to him, there is no constitutional crisis in the country and it is only the question of interpretation by the Sharif brothers.
In reply to a question about alleged involvement of his son in the Ephedrine scam‚ he said that Musa came back from abroad to face charges against him and that he also appeared before Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) in the drug quota case. That case against Musa is in the court and let the court decide about it, according to Gilani. About the recent drone attack in Miranshah‚ the Prime Minister said Pakistan and the United have yet to start discussion on new terms of engagement.
