Pakistan has decided to wait for official communication before any reaction to a proposed aid cut by a US Senate panel for convicting a doctor for helping the CIA locate al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, an official of foreign ministry said Friday. The powerful US Appropriations Committee on Thursday voted to cut economic aid by a symbolic 33-million-dollars, a million for each year Dr Shakeel Afridi will spend behind bars during his 33-year jail term.
"It is just a proposal and unless the aid cut is approved by the congress and by the president or US government, we do not think it appropriate to respond," the official said on condition of anonymity. The new cut comes just a day after Islamabad asked Washington to respect the Pakistani court's decision to convict Afridi, who allegedly worked with US intelligence officials to track down bin Laden.
