Pakistan should allow the resumption of Nato supplies and both the civilian and military leadership should not act unintelligently to let an "economic meltdown stare us in the face", former federal minister and ambassador to US Begum Abida Hussain said on Saturday.
She said that stretching of the issue "beyond endurance" by the national leadership was uncalled for under the prevailing circumstances. She said that all 55 Muslim countries "cannot help out Pakistan to meet $5 billion annual inflow in its economy from the outside world". She said that the combined GDP of all Muslim countries "is equal to that of France in the EU and the US economy alone is five times bigger than the entire EU".
According to her, there is an urgent need for imposing economic emergency with heavy cuts on development and non-development expenditures if Pakistan is serious in stretching the situation ahead. The dollar is surging fast and soon it would cross the level of Rs 100 in case no prudent decisions are taken in the larger interest of the country. Abida said she favoured stopping the Nato supply three months ago but it "is time to revisit this policy in the national interest".
