The Federal Cabinet was reportedly misinformed by a senior government official on May 23, 2012 that a control room to monitor loadshedding had been set up in the Ministry of Water and Power. On Monday, this correspondent visited the Ministry of Water and Power to see the much talked-about control room, but there was nothing on ground in the Ministry.
When a spokesman for the Ministry of Water and Power was asked about the location of the control room he said no control room had been set up in the Ministry so far. "No control room has been set up in the Ministry of Water and Power. Only a control room is working in National Power Control Centre (NPCC)," he added.
In May 23 meeting finance minister Dr Hafeez Sheikh, who is also the head of the committee on energy, briefed the cabinet on the progress achieved since the formulation of the committee. He stated that the committee met twice during last week and discussed at length the possibilities of future generation capacity enhancement, provincial role and assistance, recoveries, snags in load shedding and financial requirements for more generation of electricity. He further informed the Cabinet that a monthly action plan was being formulated for the period till December 2012.
"All possible actions have been taken to identify the gaps in the system which include recoveries and regulation against theft and pilferage," the sources quoted Hafeez Shaikh. On a point by the Minister for Water and Power that there was a problem of insufficient supply of gas for generation of electricity, the Prime Minister advised the energy committee to take decisions themselves and bring issues to the Cabinet where Cabinet decisions were required.
