Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), President Mian Nawaz Sharif has held the PPP-led federal government responsible for energy crisis in the country. Addressing a function held here on Monday in connection with "Youm-e-Takbeer" celebrations, Nawaz said, "Pakistan has been a nuclear power for the last 14 years but the successive governments failed to overcome problems confronting the country."
He regretted that Pakistan despite being an atomic power had been made a country with a begging bowl. He said, "Gas is being provided to a few industrial units in Punjab on the directions of Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani." Regarding participation of President Asif Ali Zardari in Chicago Summit, Nawaz said, "National pride demanded that the President should not have attended this moot." He said the Abbottabad operation had violated the sovereignty of Pakistan but President Zardari praised the operation in an article.
He further said that the present government was indulged in selfish activities instead of carrying out any positive work. He asked the rulers to pay attention on improving situation in Karachi and Balochistan instead of raising mere tall claims in public meetings. He said Balochistan was burning, but none cared about it. He called for apprising the people about the elements involved in "disappearance of people." He said the government was not paying any attention to improve the situation in Karachi.
Nawaz further said that those who are making claims of improving the state of affairs in the country within 90 days are telling lies. "Those who are not aware about the government how can they resolve the issues being faced to the country," he said. The PML-N leader said the then PML-N government had devised a strategy for economy, which was foiled by the military dictator.
He said Pakistan during his tenure had conducted nuclear explosions which acted as a deterrent against future explosions by the country's enemies. "We turned down US $5 billion aid but conducted nuclear tests in the larger interest of the country." He said, "We faced restrictions imposed by the West but we moved the country forward. We decided to conduct nuclear explosions the day after India did so." The decision to conduct nuclear tests, have raised the status of Pakistani nation in the comity of nations.
Other speakers said Nawaz Sharif was subjected to immense foreign pressure but he stood by his decision and saved the integrity and respect of the whole nation by conducting atomic explosions. PML-N workers tried to meet Nawaz Sharif but were stopped by security guards. This led to party workers protesting with one even lying down in front of the PML-N president's car.
Furthermore, a PML-N spokesman said his party celebrated Youm-e-Takbeer, the celebration of Pakistan's atomic explosions in 1998, with national zeal and fervour across the country. It may be noted that Pakistan, on May 28, 1998, joined the prestigious club of seven nuclear powers, by conducting nuclear tests to give a befitting response to India's initiative of testing nukes on May 11 and 13, the same year. According to PML-N spokesman, the party activists in their functions from Khyber to Karacki paid tributes to the leadership of Nawaz Sharif who "did not accept external pressure" and opted for nuclear tests to consolidate the country's defense.
