Indonesian authorities arrested four British nationals and an Indian for allegedly smuggling 4.7 kilograms of cocaine into Bali, a customs official said Monday. Bali's customs officers found the cocaine May 19 in luggage belonging to one of the British suspects, identified as Lindsay Sandiford, 56, as she arrived at the resort island from Bangkok, airport customs chief Made Wijaya said.
Police later arrested four people suspected of being her accomplices, he said. "They belong to a large international syndicate," Wijaya said. The suspects could face execution if found guilty under Indonesia's tough anti-narcotics laws. Indonesian courts regularly impose harsh punishments, including death by firing squad, for drug-related offences. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's decision last week to reduce by five years a 20-year sentence for an Australian woman convicted of smuggling 4 kilogrammes of marijuana has been criticised by some members of parliament.
