Vice Chancellor Lahore College Women University (LCWU), Dr Sabiha Mansoor said that increase in the ratio of suicide among young students is an eye opener. To avoid such incidents educational, social and psychological experts should sit together and should recommend suggestions to avoid such incidents in future and work for a violent free society.
She was addressing a press conference at LCWU here on Thursday. She said that a student council and Human Rights Society, consisting of students, has been set-up to ensure a friendly atmosphere in the university campus. Dr Sabiha said that childhood today is no longer a joyful experience. Examinations related stress, peer pressure, family issues and change in social attitude are the common reasons.
Stress, tension and depression are prevalent among young children and youth along with adults. Severe competition, extreme comparisons and fierce expectations from parents, teachers, family and friends has created an enormous amount of pressure on these young kids. Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, depression, loneliness and worthlessness results in such situation where the student feels that no matter what the cause is nothing seems to get better, and that no one is able to help. Whatever the cause is suicide attempts should always be treated seriously. She said that suicide cases among students are increasing in Pakistan.
