The government budgeted Rs 70.157 billion for public order and safety affairs in the next fiscal, increasing the allocation by 8.4 per cent, against Rs 61.85 billion set aside during the current fiscal. The police department was given a major share of the total allocation with Rs 64.7 billion. Federal government has plans to organize the police force on modern lines with the increased budgetary allocation.
The remaining Rs 5.3 billion will be spent on courts of law, fire protection, prison administration, research and development of public order and administration of public order. The allocation for police has been increased from Rs 55.9 billion in 2011-12 to Rs 64.7 billion in 2012-13.
The government has increased budgeted allocations for prison from Rs 23 million in 2011-12 to Rs 27 million for next year, with an additional allocation of Rs 4 million. Similarly, the budgetary allocation for courts has been increased from Rs 2.4 billion in 2011-12 to Rs 2.9 billion for 2012-13. The proposed allocation for administration of public order has decreased from Rs 3.2 billion in 2011-12 to Rs 2.2 billion. Allocations for fire protection have, however, increased from Rs 102 million to Rs 123 million for next year. The allocation for fire protection witnessed a slight increase keeping in view the increasing fire incidents in the capital city recently.
