A Pakistan Navy (PN) officer was elected as a member of an international body on Thursday, which facilitates the implementation of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in respect of delineation of the outer continental shelf. After a hard-fought contest, Commodore Muhammad Arshad, a Hydrographer, won a berth on the 21-member Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) during the ongoing meeting of the States Parties to the convention.
Arshad's five-year term will start on June 16. Under the Convention, coastal states establish the outer limits of their continental shelf where it extends beyond 200 miles on the basis of the recommendation of the Commission. The Commission consists of experts in the fields of geology, geophysics or hydrography. In accordance with the rules of procedure, the members elected should represent an agreed-upon geographic distribution, with no fewer than three members of the Commission elected from each geographic region. Members are elected by secret ballot, with those elected receiving a majority of two thirds of the votes of those present and voting Arshad polled 139 votes.
