Former president of Supreme Court Bar Association Barrister Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan has said that Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has nothing to do with the alleged wrongdoings of his son Arsalan and hence, no one should point finger at the CJP.
Talking to media persons at Lahore High Court premises here Monday, Aitzaz, however, admitted that real estate tycoon Malik Riaz had shown him some material relating to Arsalan Iftikhar and he felt sorry for him. Aitzaz said Malik Riaz had retuned and would present the relevant material in the Supreme Court and it would be up to the court to ascertain whether or not it was a conspiracy.
Responding to a question, Aitzaz declined to divulge the details of material shown to him, saying it would be highly improper to discuss in public the material on the basis of which SC would decide the issue. He said on one side it was being claimed vehemently that material was authenticated while Arsalan had dismissed all these allegations.
Aitzaz pointed out that media had exaggerated the issue on the basis of hearsay information, which was highly regrettable. Answering to a question, Aitzaz dismissed the notion that the whole issue was being cropped up to get PM's son exonerated in exchange of giving clean chit to CJP's son, Arslan.
He made endeavour on his own Aitzaz said and added that such sensational news should not be propagated in the media that will lower the dignity of judiciary and CJP. But his some friends who are more loyal than the king sensationalised it unnecessarily.
He said SC would start hearing petitions from June 14 against Speaker's ruling in PM's disqualification issue and he had no objection to CJP's inclusion in the bench. "CJP, however, should have not sat on the bench hearing Arsalan case and he took a wise decision and disengaged himself from the bench in view of public opinion,"he added.
When asked whether Malik Riaz had contacted him to engage as his counsel, Aitzaz said he had clients on both sides and it would be unethical to present one of them. He refuted that he had twitted a message on social network website Twitter, that Malik Riaz had not shown him material regarding Arsalan issue. He said he had no account on Twitter and any message linked to him would be bogus.
He also rebutted the allegation that he had contacted British journalist Kristina Lamb and made it clear that he had contacted Lamb last time in 2007. He went on to say that Lamb had written harsh words against him in her book and he did not meet her since then.
