Indian woman posing as man held after marrying two women for dowry
A 26-year-old woman, Sweety Sen, who belongs to India’s Uttarakhand’s Nainital district posed as a man to get married twice, before she was eventually arrested by the police for allegedly torturing one of her wives for dowry.
Sweety Sen was always a tomboy and started posing as a man, Krishna, in 2013, said Nainital’s senior superintendent of police Janmejay Khanduri. She was arrested on February 14 on charges of impersonation, fraud and forgery. “The lady used to pose as a man in terms of looks and enticed women on Facebook and later married them,” Khanduri said, Hindustan Times reported.
He added that in 2014, Sen and her family members met a 22-year-old woman he got to know on Facebook. “Sen had convinced her that she was a man,” Khanduri said. The two married the same year and started living in a rented house but soon she started assaulting the woman for dowry.
In 2016, Sen married a 20-year-old woman from Nainital district’s Kaladhungi area. In October 2017, Sen’s first wife lodged a complaint against Sen in Kathgodam police station under charges of dowry and domestic violence.
“We had arrested Sen for dowry and domestic violence. We had no clue that Sen was a woman. During questioning, Sen said she was a woman. We got her medical examination done and it was established that she was a woman,” police said.
