A much needed three-day pre-monsoon rains spell is beginning from tomorrow (Tuesday) while onset of regular monsoon season is likely during the first week of July, Met Office said here on Sunday.
It said the south-west monsoonal currents are likely to penetrate southern and eastern parts of the country from Sunday evening. Under the influence of south-west monsoon incursion, intermittent scattered rain-thundershowers are likely in Eastern Balochistan, Sindh coast, central and upper parts of Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and most parts of Kashmir from Tuesday to Thursday. Gilgit-Baltistan is also likely to receive scattered rain during the forecast period.
In its daily weather forecast Met office said dust thunderstorm/rain is expected over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Upper Sindh and Northeast Balochistan. Thunderstorm/ rain is also expected over Gilgit- Baltistan Kashmir today (Monday)
It said dust-thunderstorm/ rain occurred at isolated places of upper KPK, upper Punjab, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, while weather remained hot and dry in other parts of the country on Sunday.
It recorded rain (in mm) during past 24 hours as follows: Kotli =15, Mianwali =14, Dir = 03, Sargodha & Rawalakot = 02 (each), Kalam, Astore and Cherat = 01 (each), Gilgit, Muzaffarabad, Hunza, Bannu, Sialkot A/P & Peshawar A/P = trace (each).
Meanwhile Flood Warning Centre advised the farming community to adopt rain water harvesting practices to recharge the soil moisture reserves especially in rain-fed areas which are under stress conditions due to deficit rainfall during past four months. It said that river Kabul at Nowshera is in low flood with water inflow of 67,000 cusecs while all other major rivers are flowing below the low flood level.. However it added that water supply in river Indus and river Chenab has increased by 15,000 cusecs each during past twenty four hours which is a good sign for hydel power generation and canal water irrigation across the country.
