The apex court on Wednesday sought a report from Secretary Establishment about suspension of officer probing the Hajj corruption case, Hussain Asghar, as Inspector General of Gilgit-Baltistan who, reportedly, failed to appear before the court in the case. A three-member bench led by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, was hearing a suo motu case pertaining to the 2010 Hajj corruption scam.
Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Irfan Qadir, on the occasion of last hearing, informed the court that the federal government had issued notification regarding cancellation of the transfer order of Asghar as IGP Gilgit-Baltistan and he was directed to report back to FIA Headquarters immediately.
During the proceedings, Deputy Attorney General Dil Muhammad Alizai informed the bench that Asghar had not returned. The CJP directed that Hussain Asghar be suspended forthwith and "he should be no more IGP Gilgit Baltistan, as the Secretary Establishment himself had given commitment in writing to this court".
Justice Jawwad S Khawaja stated that according to the civil services rules the government servants were bound to follow the government orders, and they have to work in a place where they were posted. The CJP said that Asghar should be suspended under Section 5 of Efficiency and Disciplinary Rules. He questioned why the government had not proceeded against him. The DAG replied that on 19th June the relevant authority wrote a letter to Asghar and that they were still proceeding against him in accordance with law. Directing the DAG to submit the suspension notification and steps taken against Asghar for not complying with the order, the bench adjourned hearing of the case till June 28 (today).
