An Indian prisoner Surjeet Singh involved in spying case was released here on Thursday from Kot Lakhpat jail of provincial metropolis after serving his lifetime rigorous imprisonment of 27 years. Meanwhile, 311 fishermen were also handed over to Indian authorities at Wagha border in the morning.
While talking to media person after release, Surjeet Singh said that he had pleasant memories and time while being jailed in Pakistan. When asked, he said that he kept on missing his home and family members as well as green days of youth. He also said that he would be very happy to see his family and old friends in India. In response to a question Surjeet said, "he will go to Golden Temple as soon as he will reach India to express his gratitude". He said Indian prisoners in Pakistan are treated like human beings and his jail mates were very co-operative.
It is worth mentioning that Surjeet Singh, son of Sucha Singh, was originally given death sentence that was commuted in 1989 by the then president Ghulam Ishaq Khan on the advice of then Premier Benazir Bhutto. It may be mentioned here that Surjeet Singh was held at Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore. He was captured near the border with India on charges of spying during the era of military ruler Zia-ul-Haq.
Sarabjit singh was taken to Wagha Border in tight security in the morning from Kot Lakhpat Jail. Punjab Police and Prison department made pragmatic security measures to avert and unwanted situation. Sarbjit Signh was wearing white Shalwar Qameez traditional turban on his head and red colours traditional hand made shoe.
