The postponement of examinations for a week at the Federal Urdu University Science and Technology (FUUAST) following clashes between two political groups has created serious crisis for students as the university's administration fails to take any action to normalise the situation at the university, it is learnt.
Sources said that two students groups namely Anjuma-e-Talba-Islam (ATI) and People Students Federation (PSF) fought each other a week ago on using unfair means in examinations which left more than 10 students injured. After the incident, the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) has suspended the process of teaching and examinations at its Abdul Haq Campus. Sources said political activists were seen 'invigilating' the exam rooms despite the presence of university faculty.
Sources said that the clash was triggered when activists of one political group tried to stop the members of other political party from using unfair means. Sources said that usage of unfair means during the exams has become a routine matter. Most of student organisations in FUUAST were run by the unauthorised students who were not the actual students of the varsity besides they have an immense influence over administrative and academic affairs of the university due to weak administration.
Sources said that administration of FUUAST has kept itself aloof from all these wrongdoings being witnessed in the institution for last many years. A student of FUUAST wishing not to be named told Business Recorder that criminal elements attached with these students' organisations used to come at campus to take recreational drugs. He said that empty bottles of liquors were seen several times inside classrooms when students came here to attend lectures.
Sources said manhandling of teaching and non-teaching staff, harassment of students by these elements have damaged the reputation of the varsity. They said that these students groups also used to hurl threats to varsity administrations for their vested gains. Students stressed that so-called students' leaders have the strong bond with some of the crooked teachers who used them for their misappropriations.
It has also been learnt that administration of FUUAST never complained about these wrongdoings to the police station concerned against these criminal elements roaming inside vicinity freely. Disappointed by the situation, candidates complained that the postponement of the exams not only resulted in a loss of their precious time but also disturbed their focus on studies.
The delay in the holding scheduled exams would also affect the schedule of MA annual examinations. However, Student Advisor FUUAST Abdul Haq Campus Mustfa Khan Niazi said new exams to be started from July 5 besides schedule for the postponed exams would be announced shortly.
Student Advisor said that clash between two political students caused postponement of the papers. Dean Faculty of Arts FUUAST Professor Seemin Naghma informed that they held a meeting with DG Rangers and high police officials to take stock of the situation emerged after the incident.
She said that scheduled papers would be started from July 5 and in this regard security has also been beefed up in and outside the premises of the campus. She assured that action would be taken against the outsiders who used to come to campus for their vested interests. She said that scheduled holiday on the eve of Shab-e-Barat has also been called off.
