KARACHI: It was rather they hadn't provided us with the "relief". It is much disturbing for a layman now when his electricity bill is even more than his monthly income, said economic and financial analyst Ateeq-ur-Rehman.

He said hefty energy bills were a massive burden on the common man and beyond anyone's reach. One failed to understand when there was limited commercial activity due to Covid-19 lockdown, economic slowdown, steep fall in oil prices, loadshedding, etc, why people were being so heavily billed to pay for their power consumption?

He added that more sadly when people were fighting the coronavirus while they were in isolation or in quarantine they were facing loadshedding during extensive heat.

Ateeq said that under the prevailing circumstances when the government was bound to give financial relief to the masses, electricity companies were charging huge general sale tax, electricity duty, government charges and miserably recovering fuel adjustment charges of previous years.
