ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) in collaboration with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will recommend a way forward for electronic-voting (e-voting) in the country.
This was revealed by a senior official in the ministry, while talking to Business Recorder, here on Friday.
The official said that following the direction of President Dr Arif Alvi to mature the e-voting process, a meeting was held at the MoITT.
The meeting was chaired by Additional Secretary Sher Afgan Khan, which was attended by various stakeholders including representatives from the ECP and the NADRA to discuss the e-voting.
The meeting was informed about the measures taken by the ECP to introduce electronic voting machines, biometric identification and online voting system for overseas Pakistanis as well.
They also discussed various proposals to expedite the process. The participants deliberated upon different aspects of introduction of e-voting, and decided to come up with a way-forward soon.
Secretary MoITT, Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui told Business Recorder that the committee would finalise recommendations, which would be presented to President Dr Alvi. Dr Alvi recently chaired a meeting to review the progress on overseas voting, biometric identification and electronic voting system in the country.
The president said that the existing voting regime needed improvement in view of its vulnerabilities. The meeting proposed to constitute a committee of experts to guide and identify the issues, pertaining to e-voting, and proposed possible solutions.
