KARACHI: An unknown person sustained a bullet wound when smugglers sprayed bullets on the customs officials during anti-smuggling drive near Naik Muhammad Goth.

According to details, the MCC (E&C) has received credible information regarding smuggling of contraband goods.

Reacting on this information, the ASO staff at Hamdard Choke Point signalled a vehicle to stop at around 8:00am on Sunday. The vehicle which was being covered by two other vehicles did not stop and fled.

Subsequently, the ASO vehicle began chase and after covering a distance of about 5km, suspected smugglers in the vehicle opened fire on the customs team near Naik Muhammad Goth as a result an unknown passer-by sustained a bullet wound, who was later rushed to Abbasi Shaheed hospital where he underwent surgery.

Customs officials claimed that the assailants belonged to nefarious smuggler Asif Sanjlani gang who have in past resorted to straight firing at the customs officials and cases against individuals belonging to this gang were also registered by customs.

The Collector MCC (E&C), Karachi while taking notice of the incident has constituted a committee headed by Additional Collector of Customs to look into the matter.

Meanwhile, sources said that customs officials while chasing the suspected vehicle were trapped in Naik Muhammad Goth where they were badly beaten by these alleged smugglers.

Later, police on 15 call rushed to the Goth and rescued customs officials safely besides taking a non-custom paid suspected vehicle loaded with contraband gutka (chewing tobaccos) and betel nuts into custody. The legal proceedings have been initiated. Further investigation is in progress.
