ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) Punjab Chapter has elected Chaudhary Zaka Ashraf as new chairman of the association for an interim period of three months owing to resignation of Nouman Ahmed Khan.

According to the PSMA, officials elections for the PSMA will be held in September 2020, while recently held elections the body has elected three executive members for one-year term.

The PSMA officials said that it was likely that Punjab Chapter of the PSMA may elect Chaudhary Zaka Ashraf as new chairman in the next annual polls of the body as Jahangir Khan Tareen-led group is not interested.

The Punjab Chapter of the PSMA besides electing Chaudhary Zaka Ashraf has also elected Chaudhary Mohammad Waheed and Mian Faisal Mukhtiar as new executive members.

Some of the members had threatened to launch the no-confidence motion in the last meeting of the association's Punjab Zone held on June 13, 2020, and asked the sitting chairman for honourable exit following Jahangir Khan's departure to London.

The members alleged the sitting chairman of protecting Jehangir Khan Tareen's interests and following his instruction, while not handling the industry crisis amicably.

The role of the chairman is to create awareness among the public and sensitize them about the cost of production and other industry issues.

The members want that the association should proactively come forward to dispel the impression of wrongdoings by the industry.

However, he insisted that everyone has his own working strategy.

It is not necessary that everyone agrees with the working of the chairman, he added.
