KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday sought the arguments from sugar mills and federal government on July 28, 2020 in response to a petition against the report of sugar inquiry commission.

A division bench of SHC headed by Justice Khadim Hussain Sheikh hearing the petition of sugar mills against the report of sugar inquiry commission stated that Supreme Court has ordered to complete the hearing of the case in three weeks when the petitioners sought the adjournment of the hearings.

Justice Khadim stated that the bench would give its verdict in the next hearing after the arguments of the federal government sugar mills, which it sought for July 28, 2020.

Advocate Sattar Peerzada submitted in the court that Advocate Makhdoom Ali Khan would make arguments on behalf of the sugar mills and said that the petition of identical nature of sugar mills is also being heard by Islamabad High Court (SHC).

"IHC is holding the hearing of the case on a daily basis under the directives of apex judiciary," Peerzada stated and added that Makhdoom Ali Khan will make arguments in SHC after concluding the same in IHC. Kashif Paracha will be appearing in the court in the capacity of Additional Attorney General in the same case.

Sugarcane growers have also filed a petition to become a party to the case. Justice Khadim remarked that the court would give its verdict after hearing the growers of sugarcane.

Sugar mills through their petition stated, inter alia, that sugar inquiry commission was not constituted as per the law as members of commission were also part of the inquiry against sugar mills conducted some time ago.
