Juventus decide Ronaldo’s future after shock UCL elimination

Ronaldo struck twice but failed to keep his side in the compaction as they were eliminated to Lyon 2-2 on aggregate.

Juventus chief Andrea Agnelli is hopeful that their big money signing Cristiano Ronaldo will still continue at the club despite shock elimination from UEFA Champions League (UCL) in round of 16 against Lyon.

Ronaldo scored twice on Friday in second leg win over the Ligue 1 side but could not keep Juventus in the competition as they crashed out on away goals after drawing 2-2 on aggregate.

The Portuguese great was bought to Serie A by the Old Lady with the main intention to end their long European Cup quest.

At 35, Ronaldo has few chances left to lift what would be a record-equalling sixth trophy, with reports suggesting he was pushing for a move to PSG.

However, Agnelli has no concerns about the striker leaving anytime soon despite their shock exit. "I am entirely convinced he will stay,' Agnelli told Sky Sport Italia.

"I think the report [from France Football] was down to an interview from several months ago, which just happened to be published just before we played against a French team. It's an old media trick.

"No, I can assure you that Ronaldo remains a pillar of Juventus."

The Italian club trailed 1-0 going into the second leg with Lyon at the Stadio delle Alpi, but their night was immediately made harder when Memphis Depay scored a 12th-minute penalty.

Ronaldo then slotted home a spot kick of his own just before half-time to level the scores on the night, before lashing in a thunderbolt from distance on the hour mark.

However he and his Juventus teammates were unable to find the crucial third goal needed to avoid going out on away goals.
